Blogging in Kedah Heritage Tools

The catching of freshwater fish or land fish with traditional method is one of the hereditary that was practiced by Malay society from ancient times up till today. Besides being the resources for daily usage, it is also one of the activity for a person to use up their free time to build fishing tools and go for fishing.

The tools used for freshwater fishing in Kedah are as follow:

a) bubu

b) tangkul

c) tuar

d) rawai

e) sempila

f) belat

g) bok mengelau

h) pelompat

i) serampang

The shape and size of the tools depends of the type of fish that are aimed and the location for fishing. Normally, the targeted locations will be the small holes or downstreams, water channels flowing in and out of fieldsor water trench,

Fishing normally occurs during the field being hijacked or after havesting the grains with the method of trapping. The best time for fishing is when the wind is blown to the directions of east as it is said that this is the time the fishes will appear the most. Most of the fishes being caught are as follows :

a) keli

b) haruan

c) toman

d) puyu

e) sepat

f) lampam

g) kelah

h) belida

i) seberau
